How ‘Deprogramming’ Kids From How to ‘Do School’ Could Improve Learning

Standards-, competency- or mastery-based teaching and assessment. In my IBDP English class I use this for exam prep. Basically, instead of doing a round of practise papers, grading them, and doing another round, I’ll let the students take as long and as many attempts as they needed to write a level 7 paper, while providing guidance and detailed feedback. That way they learn the skills at their own pace, know what it’s like to produce a near perfect essay, and know that they are capable of doing so.
