Start with Why: The Power of Student-Driven Learning

This excellent article demonstrates far more eloquently that I could ever hope to the issues around effective and meaningful curriculum (and lesson) planning about which I ranted a couple of weeks ago. Good stuff.

The biggest obstacle I’ve found in pursuing a student-driven approach to education is that the students I teach aren’t used to it; they’re so used to sitting and taking notes that the idea of having a say, and taking responsibility for their own learning, is totally alien to them. Until more teachers in more schools take the leap of faith that such empowerment requires, this will remain the case.
